Door County, Day 3 – Shrooms, Segways, and Campfires

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

This was our last day in Door County. There were a lot of places to buy local produce, and we finally found a place to buy morels. Too bad it’s so far away from home!! We had plans to buy some, but they were going to sit in the car all day. I have to believe they wouldn’t have made it.

We also went on a Segway tour at Peninsula State Park (I hope that’s the one!). I had a lot of reservations about this activity, but they are gone. We spent a while learning how to drive the Segways, and it was really quite easy to pick up. Then we drove around the park at 12 miles per hour! When we got done, our feet hurt from the intense standing. Isn’t that weird?

On our last night, we had a campfire in the fire pit outside. If I haven’t mentioned it before, we were in Door County on Memorial Day weekend, and technically, it was out of season. It was a little cold!!

More Beach, More of Everything in Tobago

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

Today we went back to the House of Pancakes. I have decided that they make the best corned beef hash ever there. Just ask Andy.

Then we went to Store Bay Beach followed by Pidgeon Point Beach. It was clear and very warm. Being a Minnesotan that is completely unaccustomed to the warm weather (at least in this season), I was sweating, and my sunscreen kept running into my eyes. That was uncomfortable. Andy swam, I waded in, and we both took some pictures. It is hard to take a bad picture here!

That was today. For dinner, Andy made pasta with clam sauce and curried basmati rice with grocery supplies we had got at the Penny Saver a few days ago.

Beaches and Crown Point

Sunday, March 15th, 2009

I woke up exhausted, which is odd because I slept a lot on the planes yesterday. So we slept in, but only until about 8:30. It was dark when we got in the previous day, so we saw our first glimpse of the ocean out the window. It was beautiful.

We spent this day exploring the immediate area. It is also muggy and warm, and that takes some getting used to. The beaches are everything you could want. There are areas where the ocean is crashing on rocks. There are also tannish sandy beaches. I took lots of pictures of flowers and plants as well.

We also picked up our rental car. In Tobago, you drive on the left. We thought we might get a car with a steering wheel on the left, but that was on the right (backwards), too. It was really weird to drive on the left hand side of the road, even for the passenger. But you usually had enough time to think things through – the speed limit for the whole island is 30 mph.

We tried some local cuisine, conc with dumplings and crab with dumplings. The same curry sauce was on both dishes. The dumplings were like very large, very thick ravioli (with no filling).

I also tried panorama mode on my camera for the the first time. I think it is really cool, and I’m probably going to take many more pictures in panorama mode from now on. The picture you’re seeing below is my first. If you want to see all my pictures, you should really go here. There were too many to blog about it.

Sunsets

Sunday, February 1st, 2009

We have been seeing the most incredible sunsets lately. We see them driving home from work now that the days are getting a little longer. I took these pictures while we were in the car so it is amazing that they are even slightly in focus.

I wish I had taken a picture of the sunset on Inauguration Day, but my camera was in the trunk that day! These sunsets we have to show you are very similar.

Oxbow Hiking

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

This is the last of my previous summer blogs (I think!). This one was in a more incomplete state than the rest of my post-summer summer blog posts, so I had to choose some of the pictures. It was really hard! Oxbow Park is just a beautiful place. And it makes me miss summer! But only one more month of winter to go, right?

June 29, 2008

Here I will share some of my pictures from our hike (today) through Oxbow Park (and zoo).

null

We went through the zoo first. We saw the bear, the coyotes, and the prairie dogs. Everything was pretty much the same as last year. For the most entertaining animals, it was a tie between the wild turkeys and the porcupine. As you can see here, the turkeys were being turkeys.

And this porcupine was doing a dance. He was either happy or very disturbed.

Then we went hiking through the trees and out to the meadow. It was beautiful, as always. Here are a few pictures of some of the flowers we saw.

One important thing to note is that it is almost black cap season. We saw a lot of almost ripe black caps, and we actually found one ripe one.

Where is my laptop?

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

I know where it is. It’s in the basement and has been for a while now. So, today I was lazy and felt like blogging (and I wanted to see if I could right something of the blogging magnitude on my iPhone). This is it. Yes, I don’t actually have any thing to say. All I have for you is hope for tomorrow. I will probably write a real blog post soon. It will have pictures and might even include descriptions of the really exciting recent events in our life like the awesome Obama sunset and Amish friendship bread. Hopefully I’ll make it downstairs soon. And maybe I should tell you how well writing on the iPhone went: it’s ok, but proofreading is really hard.

Foxy Christmas

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

As Darcy alluded to in a previous post, we played cards on Christmas (which I can remember winning one game of) and I also took some pictures. I was taking pictures of the many birds outside in the backyard, but then we spotted a fox romping around. I wasn’t fast enough the first time but he came back twice. On the final time he decided to stop in the perfect spot, so I snapped some pictures. Click the picture for all of my pics.

Pre Christmas Activities

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

Below are pictures from a few days before Christmas. We were still in Rochester when these photos were taken. And on this day we wrapped gifts for family in KS, exchanged Christmas stocking with each other, and opened gifts from family in Michigan. As you can see, I’m still letting Picasa do all the work for me. :)
