On Memorial Day weekend, we took a trip to Door County in Wisconsin. Let me begin by telling you the truth. There is nothing special about the doors in Door County. It was shortly before our trip that I found this out so I didn’t leave Rochester with the wrong idea. I do think that everyone in Door County should consider implementing a plan for having unique doors all over the area since they already have the reputation. During our stay, I heard that Door County is the doorway to Lake Michigan so now you know the reason behind the name. On wikipedia, they say Door County is named after the French name for the area, which translates as “Door to the Way to Death” and is a statement of how many shipwrecks occur. No one in Door County mentioned this other source to me. Maybe it is common knowledge?

We drove through Wisconsin for about 6 hours to get to Door County. We stayed at Cave Point, which is just a rural road that is somewhat close to Lake Michigan at points. Adam organized renting a house among all of our vacationing friends, and pictures are below. We weren’t on a beach, but the house was built on a dune, and we could see the lake from upstairs.

We walked about 10 minutes to get to the beach. On the ground there were wild strawberries. Green ones, but still the weeds were strawberries. Clearly, there are better weeds in Door County. We got our initial impressions of the beach on that day. Fine sand, dunes, and clear water.

We ventured out that night for our first culinary experience in Door County. We ate at Bistro 42, where we tried some of our first Door County wine as well. It was a pretty restaurant, and we saw a pretty sunset.

When we got back to the house, most of our friends had arrived (if I remember correctly). There was a really cool fire place, so someone felt obligated to build a fire. I went to bed instead.
