Door County, Day 2 – Sister Bay and Ferry

After Sturgeon Bay (and seeing those amazing candy caned striped tulips), we had lunch and went to Cave Point. Cave Point is a county park, and it is one of the highlights of my trip.

We visited a candy store in Sister Bay where I got a fabulous bear claw, and we walked onto the dock.

We then drove to the ferry to Washington Island. We didn’t take the ferry, but we did look around.

Door County, Day 2 – Flowers

This post is about more Day 2 events of our Door County trip. Instead of randomly interjecting pictures of flowers, I am putting all of them into this post. But you can be assured that all pictures were indeed taken on Day 2. While we were there, Door County was advertising their blossom festival. It was a funny situation because I could never quite figure out what events were going on from their blossom festival information. We did see a few pretty flowers and lots of cherry tree blossoms, though. BTW, these pictures are completely out of order relative to time, so get ready.

Random flowers at the Sturgeon Bay Harbor.

Flowers all over the forest floor at Cave Point.

The Wild Tomato flowers.

Cherry Blossoms.

Door County, Day 2 – Sturgeon Bay

May 23, 2009

For our first full day in Door County, we drove to Sturgeon Bay. We started out by walking around outside the maritime museum (we did not go in). For many of us, all things to do with water and sailing were novelties, so the boats on the lake as well as the random boat pieces scattered around the outside of the museum kept us quite entertained.

We also walked around downtown Sturgeon Bay, where we tried our first cherry wine. A winner, in my opinion. The downtown was quite cute, but I was secretly wondering how much better the town would look with uniquely painted doors.

We then took a tour on the Harbor Lady. We saw closeups of many of the boats in the bay, and we also saw a lighthouse.

This post covers only our morning. We had grand vacation plans with too much to do, so there will be more in the next update.

Door County, Day 1

May 22, 2009

On Memorial Day weekend, we took a trip to Door County in Wisconsin. Let me begin by telling you the truth. There is nothing special about the doors in Door County. It was shortly before our trip that I found this out so I didn’t leave Rochester with the wrong idea. I do think that everyone in Door County should consider implementing a plan for having unique doors all over the area since they already have the reputation. During our stay, I heard that Door County is the doorway to Lake Michigan so now you know the reason behind the name. On wikipedia, they say Door County is named after the French name for the area, which translates as “Door to the Way to Death” and is a statement of how many shipwrecks occur. No one in Door County mentioned this other source to me. Maybe it is common knowledge?

We drove through Wisconsin for about 6 hours to get to Door County. We stayed at Cave Point, which is just a rural road that is somewhat close to Lake Michigan at points. Adam organized renting a house among all of our vacationing friends, and pictures are below. We weren’t on a beach, but the house was built on a dune, and we could see the lake from upstairs.

We walked about 10 minutes to get to the beach. On the ground there were wild strawberries. Green ones, but still the weeds were strawberries. Clearly, there are better weeds in Door County. We got our initial impressions of the beach on that day. Fine sand, dunes, and clear water.

We ventured out that night for our first culinary experience in Door County. We ate at Bistro 42, where we tried some of our first Door County wine as well. It was a pretty restaurant, and we saw a pretty sunset.

When we got back to the house, most of our friends had arrived (if I remember correctly). There was a really cool fire place, so someone felt obligated to build a fire. I went to bed instead. :)

Woodside 5k

May 20, 2009

Here are pictures from the Woodside 5k. It was a pretty windy day. I had learned from a prior prediction 5k and deliberately overestimated my time. It still wasn’t enough of an overestimation, but I have to admit that I did a lot of talking on this race.

Somewhere south of Rochester (and on the way home from Whalen) is Inspiration Point. We decided to stop here to be inspired.

Many were inspired.

Standstill Parade Part 3 – Everything Else

There were dancers!

More dancers.

And the Rhubarb Sisters. Out of Lanesboro, and here in Whalan for the day. It’s a good thing, too, because we missed them at the Rhubarb Festival.

And us. Chilly, but happy to be here.

Standstill Parade Part 2 – Food

Here is Stan’s still, and I didn’t go anywhere near him since I assumed he was a lot like the pickle guy at the Renaissance Festival. I didn’t see any beverages (from the distance I was at) but maybe he wasn’t sharing!

Something very ethnic, and no one can remember the name. Help!

Lefse. As you can see there are 2 lines: the < 4 and the >4 line.

No one in our group tried the Egg McWhalan. Unfortunate.

Scrapping

May 15, 2009

I spent Friday night scrapping with Amber, Amber, and Jessie at Rochester Scrapbook Company. I wasn’t exactly scrapping, but I had inspiration to accomplish a lot of organizing photos and writing blog posts (posts of which clearly I did not publish promptly).

Here is Amber’s work.
