The Basil Is Dead

Saturday, January 27th, 2007

I’ve been neglecting all my plants lately. The basil is dead, as you already know. My amarylis shriveled up and died as well but this morning I looked again, and it is regenerating itself. I am quite amazed. I think this plant wants to spite me.

Since I’m guaranteed of an awesome amarylis flower or three, I am going to start watering it again. I’m going to start more basil, and hopefully this year they won’t be huge amazon basil plants. I need to figure out how to make them grow up orderly and nicely.

I’m trying to decide what other herbs I should grow. My rosemary never did very well, so I don’t think I’ll pursue that anymore. Chives were odd and sparse, but I’ve been told I should have planted more of them. Oregano and lavender were pretty easy so I’ll probably start with those.

Sundays are days for bread.

Sunday, January 14th, 2007

So occasionally on Sunday I get the urge to bake. I know this urge is familiar to a few others, namely Jon and Jim. So this Sunday I went perusing AllRecipes and I found a rather highly rated white bread recipe. It is called Amish White Bread. It’s a really simple bread recipe and I must say it is fantastic. It reminds me of the Great Harvest Bread Company‘s white bread. Soft and slightly sweet, I highly recommend it.

So other than baking, today was quite a lazy day. We went to church, came back and napped/sat around/baked. Maybe I’ll do something more than that today, but it’s not looking likely. The weekend is too short.

I will leave you with a very interesting link, kind of happy (for the art) and sad (for the books) all at the same time.

Less Outlander, More of Something Else

Friday, January 12th, 2007

I’m on a quest to reduce the number of books I’m reading. I’m reading a lot at the moment, and I’m just not that fond of any of them. So today I finished the Amazing (or some other adjective) Journey of Prince Jen. It was a Lloyd Alexander book, and it turned out to be one more well suited to children. It had a few funny moments and a few funny characters. So hopefully I can finish Outlander next. I won’t miss reading that one either. :)

Red Mars. Green Mars. Blue Mars.

Thursday, January 11th, 2007

I read all them all. They were long, and there was some neat science. The building phases and science parts were pretty entertaining, but the political stuff, the personal, cultural, and global conflicts, and the long boring negotiations, not so much.

Red Mars, with the most science of all the books and a very entertaining plot, gets 5 stars. It reminds me of Rendevous With Rama and 2001 but in a new and unique way.

And then there was Green Mars and Blue Mars. I had already had a great experience with Red Mars so I kept reading. There was a lot of politics that I didn’t particularly care about in these books. And everyone managed to successfully negotiate EVERYTHING. That was long and boring read about. Every once in a while I had a glimmer of the science that I liked so much about Red Mars, and it was enough to keep me going. These books had some characters I liked so that was worth about 4 stars to me. But the plots were missing stuff that was interesting to me so I would give the plot 3 stars. Overall I would give them 4 stars, but Green Mars and Blue Mars are just riding on Red Mars’ coattails.

44 hours and counting

Thursday, January 4th, 2007

So I surpassed 44 hours in Zelda not too long ago tonight and I’m still not done with the game. Of course about 4 of those latest hours were trying to get other random Pieces of Heart, which I must say can be fairly easy for some of them and downright frustrating for other ones. I think Darcy would like me to be done with the game as thats about all I am doing at night anymore. I guess thats a good sign that the Zelda was well worth the fifty bucks I paid for it. Only a few other games have engrossed me so much, the other one being X-Men Legends and Resident Evil 4, both the for the GameCube. I haven’t really found a game that engrosses me yet for the PS2 (not including DDR, that doesn’t count). For me that just speaks to the superior gameplay that games for Nintendo game systems have. Yeah, it might not have the best graphics, but damn it’s fun. I need to find someone with an XBox 360 and Dead Rising and/or Gears of War, both of which I have heard good things about and would like to try.

I think the next thing on the docket is to finish Zelda and possibly get over to the Man Room and continue working my DVD cabinet that has been pretty much dormant since the beginning of November. Maybe I’ll even ride my bike back, it’s almost warm enough out. I do hear we are getting more snow, which will at least make Jon happier. Well thats enough rambling for tonight.

P.S. Someone out there has my Pinky & The Brain DVDs, if you do I would like them back. I know I loaned them to someone I just can’t remember who that person was.
